Elasticities of Demand and Supply

Price elasticity of supply and its determinants

  • 3 things to know
  • All three components

Overview

Spare capacity, stock levels, the mobility of factors and the length of the production period — and why supply is almost always more elastic in the long run.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Key term

Define price elasticity of supply.

Key term

State the formula for price elasticity of supply.

Numbers

Price rises from £4.00 to £4.60 and quantity supplied rises from 800 to 1,040. Calculate price elasticity of supply.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define price elasticity of supply.

    Model answer

Price elasticity of supply measures the responsiveness of quantity supplied to a change in price. The coefficient is normally positive.

  2. 2

State the formula for price elasticity of supply.

    Model answer

Price elasticity of supply equals the percentage change in quantity supplied divided by the percentage change in price. The two percentage changes normally move in the same direction.

  3. 3

Price rises from £4.00 to £4.60 and quantity supplied rises from 800 to 1,040. Calculate price elasticity of supply.

    Model answer

Quantity supplied rises by 30% and price rises by 15%, so price elasticity of supply is +2.0. Supply is price elastic over that range.

  4. 4

Price rises from £20 to £25 and quantity supplied rises from 1,000 to 1,050. Calculate price elasticity of supply.

    Model answer

Quantity supplied rises by 5% and price rises by 25%, so price elasticity of supply is +0.2. Supply is price inelastic over that range.

  5. 5

What does a perfectly inelastic supply curve look like?

    Model answer

A perfectly inelastic supply curve is vertical, because quantity supplied is fixed whatever the price. The coefficient is zero.

  6. 6

What does a perfectly elastic supply curve look like?

    Model answer

A perfectly elastic supply curve is horizontal at one price. Producers offer any quantity at that price and nothing at all below it.
