Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define cyclical unemployment.
Model answer
Cyclical unemployment is unemployment caused by a fall in aggregate demand during a downturn. Employment recovers as demand recovers.
- 2
Why is cyclical unemployment also called demand deficient unemployment?
Model answer
Cyclical unemployment arises because total demand is too low to employ everyone willing to work. A deficiency of aggregate demand is therefore the cause.
- 3
How does a fall in the level of GDP create unemployment?
Model answer
A fall in real GDP means firms are producing and selling less. Firms reduce hours and shed workers in order to cut costs.
- 4
How is cyclical unemployment shown in AD/AS analysis?
Model answer
A leftward shift of aggregate demand cuts real output below the full employment level. The gap between actual and full employment output measures the cyclical unemployment.
- 5
What is the relationship between cyclical unemployment and the output gap?
Model answer
Cyclical unemployment rises as a negative output gap widens. A positive output gap implies that cyclical unemployment has been eliminated.
- 6
Give two events that could cause a rise in cyclical unemployment.
Model answer
A banking crisis that restricts lending to firms can cause cyclical unemployment. A collapse in export demand from a major trading partner can also cause it.
