- 1
What is the European Union?
Model answer
The European Union is a political and economic union of European states. Members share a single market and a body of common law, and pool decision-making in stated areas.
- 2
How many member states does the European Union have?
Model answer
The European Union has 27 member states following the departure of the United Kingdom in 2020. Membership had reached 28 at its largest.
- 3
What is the single European market?
Model answer
The single European market allows goods, services, capital and people to move freely between member states. Common rules and standards replace separate national requirements.
- 4
When did the single market take effect?
Model answer
The single market came into effect on 1 January 1993. The Single European Act of 1986 set the programme that produced it.
- 5
What are the four freedoms?
Model answer
The four freedoms are the free movement of goods, of services, of capital and of people. Each is intended to let a business or a worker operate across the market as if it were one country.
- 6
What is the customs union element of the European Union?
Model answer
Members apply a common external tariff to goods entering from outside the union. Trade agreements with third countries are therefore negotiated by the union rather than by each member separately.
