Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define total utility.

    Model answer

Total utility is the whole satisfaction a consumer gains from a given quantity of a good. Total utility normally rises as consumption rises.

  2. 2

    Define marginal utility.

    Model answer

Marginal utility is the extra satisfaction gained from consuming one more unit of a good. Marginal utility is the change in total utility divided by the change in quantity.

  3. 3

State the law of diminishing marginal utility.

    Model answer

The law of diminishing marginal utility states that each extra unit adds less satisfaction than the unit before. Marginal utility therefore falls as consumption of a good rises.

  4. 4

Give an everyday example of diminishing marginal utility.

    Model answer

The first glass of water on a hot day gives great satisfaction. The fourth glass adds far less and may add nothing at all.

  5. 5

What happens to total utility when marginal utility falls to zero?

    Model answer

Total utility reaches its maximum when marginal utility falls to zero. A further unit consumed would then reduce total utility.

  6. 6

What happens to total utility when marginal utility becomes negative?

    Model answer

Total utility falls once marginal utility turns negative. A rational consumer stops before that point is reached.
