Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define total revenue.

    Model answer

Total revenue is the money a firm receives from selling its output. Total revenue equals price multiplied by the quantity sold.

  2. 2

    Define average revenue.

    Model answer

Average revenue equals total revenue divided by the quantity sold. Average revenue is the same as the price for a firm charging one price.

  3. 3

    Define marginal revenue.

    Model answer

Marginal revenue is the addition to total revenue from selling one more unit. The figure is found by dividing the change in total revenue by the change in quantity.

  4. 4

Which three values are calculated for both costs and revenues?

    Model answer

Total, average and marginal values are calculated for both costs and revenues. Each marginal value is the change caused by one extra unit of output.

  5. 5

Why is the average revenue curve the same as the firm's demand curve?

    Model answer

Average revenue equals the price at every quantity sold. The demand curve shows price at each quantity, so the two curves coincide.

  6. 6

A firm sells 200 units at £15 each. Calculate total revenue and average revenue.

    Model answer

Total revenue is £3,000, found by multiplying 200 units by £15. Average revenue is £15, the same as the selling price.
