Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the World Trade Organisation?

    Model answer

The World Trade Organisation is the international body that sets the rules of trade between nations. The organisation was established in 1995 as successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade of 1947.

  2. 2

What are the main functions of the World Trade Organisation?

    Model answer

The organisation administers trade agreements and provides the forum for negotiating new ones. Trade disputes between members are settled under its procedures. Trade policies of members are reviewed, and technical assistance is given to developing countries.

  3. 3

What is the most favoured nation principle?

    Model answer

The most favoured nation principle requires a member to extend to all other members any favourable trading terms granted to one. Discrimination between trading partners is thereby prohibited, with limited exceptions.

  4. 4

What exceptions exist to the most favoured nation principle?

    Model answer

Regional trade agreements and customs unions are permitted to grant better terms internally. Preferential access may also be granted to developing countries. Both exceptions are widely used.

  5. 5

What is the national treatment principle?

    Model answer

The national treatment principle requires imported goods to be treated no less favourably than domestic ones. The requirement applies once the goods have entered the market. Internal taxes and regulations may not be used as disguised protection.

  6. 6

How does the World Trade Organisation settle disputes?

    Model answer

A complaining member requests consultations, and a panel is appointed if those fail. The panel reports and its findings may be appealed. A member that does not comply may face authorised retaliation from the complainant.
