Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define gross domestic product.
Model answer
Gross domestic product is the total value of goods and services produced within a country in a given period. GDP is normally measured over a year or a quarter.
- 2
Distinguish between nominal and real gross domestic product.
Model answer
Nominal GDP values output at the prices of the year in which it was produced. Real GDP values output at constant prices, so the effect of inflation is removed.
- 3
How is the rate of economic growth calculated from real GDP?
Model answer
The growth rate equals the change in real GDP divided by the initial real GDP, multiplied by 100. The figure is expressed as a percentage per year.
- 4
Real GDP rises from £2,000 billion to £2,050 billion in a year. Calculate the rate of economic growth.
Model answer
The change in real GDP is £50 billion, and £50 billion divided by £2,000 billion equals 0.025. The rate of economic growth is 2.5%.
- 5
Real GDP falls from £500 billion to £490 billion over a year. Calculate the rate of economic growth.
Model answer
The change in real GDP is −£10 billion, and −£10 billion divided by £500 billion equals −0.02. The economy contracts at a rate of 2%.
- 6
What is real GDP per capita and why is it used?
Model answer
Real GDP per capita is real GDP divided by the population. The measure shows whether output is growing faster than the number of people sharing it.
