Why is enrolment a weaker indicator than completion or literacy?
Why are mobile telephone subscriptions a useful indicator?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why are direct indicators used alongside income measures?
Model answer
Direct indicators measure the outcome rather than the means. Life expectancy and literacy describe conditions people experience. Income only describes the resources potentially available to produce them.
- 2
What health indicators are used to measure development?
Model answer
Life expectancy at birth, infant and under-five mortality, and maternal mortality are the principal health indicators. Access to clean water, sanitation and trained medical staff are used alongside them.
- 3
Why is infant mortality regarded as a sensitive indicator?
Model answer
Infant survival depends on nutrition, clean water, maternal health and access to care together. A high rate therefore signals failure across several systems at once, and the figure responds relatively quickly to improvement.
- 4
What education indicators are used?
Model answer
Adult literacy, primary and secondary enrolment, completion rates and mean years of schooling are the main education indicators. Pupil-teacher ratios and spending per pupil measure the inputs.
- 5
Why is enrolment a weaker indicator than completion or literacy?
Model answer
Enrolment counts children registered at a school. Completion counts those who finish, and literacy measures what was actually learned. A country can report near-universal enrolment while many children leave unable to read.
- 6
What indirect indicators of development are used?
Model answer
Access to the internet and mobile telephone subscriptions per head are widely used. Electricity access, road density, calorie intake and the proportion of the population in urban areas are others.
