- 3 things to know
- All three components

What is a working monopoly?
State the underpinning assumptions of monopoly.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a pure monopoly.
Model answer
A pure monopoly is an industry with a single firm supplying the whole market. The firm's own demand curve is the industry demand curve.
- 2
What is a working monopoly?
Model answer
A working monopoly is a firm with enough market share to influence price substantially. A share of 25% or more is often used to identify one in practice.
- 3
State the underpinning assumptions of monopoly.
Model answer
Monopoly assumes one seller, no close substitutes and very high barriers to entry. The firm is a price maker and can hold abnormal profit in the long run.
- 4
Why is a monopolist described as a price maker?
Model answer
A monopolist faces the whole downward sloping industry demand curve. The firm can set either the price or the quantity, but not both independently.
- 5
Describe the revenue curves facing a monopolist.
Model answer
Average revenue slopes downward and marginal revenue lies below it, falling twice as steeply. Marginal revenue turns negative beyond the mid-point of a straight line demand curve.
- 6
Name four sources of monopoly power.
Model answer
Legal protection, control of an essential resource, economies of scale and strong brand loyalty create monopoly power. Each of the four keeps rivals out of the market.
