Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is economic development?
Model answer
Economic development is a sustained improvement in the standard of living and the range of choices open to people. Health, education, security and participation are included alongside income.
- 2
How does economic development differ from economic growth?
Model answer
Economic growth is a rise in real output. Economic development is a broader improvement in welfare and capability. Growth can occur without development if the extra output is not distributed or converted into better lives.
- 3
Give an example of growth occurring without development.
Model answer
An economy discovering oil can record rapid growth while health, education and income for most of the population barely change. Revenue may accrue to a small elite or to foreign firms.
- 4
Can development occur without growth?
Model answer
Development can occur without growth over short periods. Redistribution, better public health or improved education can raise welfare while output is flat. Sustained development over decades has generally required growth to fund it.
- 5
What did Amartya Sen argue about development?
Model answer
Sen argued that development is the expansion of the freedoms people have reason to value. Income matters as a means to those freedoms rather than as the objective. Poverty on that account is a deprivation of capabilities.
- 6
What is the capabilities approach?
Model answer
The capabilities approach judges a society by what people are actually able to do and to be. Being well nourished, educated, healthy and able to take part in community life are the measures. Resources held are treated as a means rather than the end.
