Scarcity, choice and the basic economic problem
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Basic economic problem, want and a need and why scarcity affects rich countries as well as poor ones.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define scarcity.
What is the basic economic problem?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define scarcity.
Model answer
Scarcity exists because human wants are unlimited while the resources available to meet them are finite. Scarcity forces every society to choose between competing uses of those resources.
- 2
What is the basic economic problem?
Model answer
The basic economic problem is that finite resources cannot satisfy unlimited wants. Every economy must therefore decide how its scarce resources are used.
- 3
Why does scarcity make choice unavoidable?
Model answer
Resources devoted to one purpose cannot be devoted to another at the same time. Choice is therefore forced on households, firms and governments alike.
- 4
Distinguish between a want and a need.
Model answer
A need is something required for survival, such as food, water and shelter. A want is a desire for a good or service that goes beyond survival.
- 5
Explain why scarcity affects rich countries as well as poor ones.
Model answer
Wants expand as incomes rise, so no country reaches a point where every want is met. Scarcity is a relative condition rather than a measure of poverty.
- 6
What is meant by ceteris paribus?
Model answer
Ceteris paribus means all other things held equal. Economists use the assumption to isolate the effect of one variable while the rest are held constant.
