- 1
What is economic and monetary union?
Model answer
Economic and monetary union is the arrangement under which participating member states share a single currency and a single monetary policy. Fiscal policy remains largely national, subject to agreed rules.
- 2
What is the eurozone?
Model answer
The eurozone is the group of European Union member states that have adopted the euro. Twenty-one member states use the euro, Bulgaria having joined in January 2026.
- 3
When was the euro introduced?
Model answer
The euro came into existence as an accounting currency in 1999. Notes and coins entered circulation in participating states in 2002.
- 4
What are the convergence criteria for joining the euro?
Model answer
The Maastricht criteria require price stability and exchange rate stability. Public finances must show a deficit below 3 per cent of gross domestic product and debt below 60 per cent. Long-term interest rates must sit close to those of the best performers.
- 5
What are the benefits of a single currency for trade?
Model answer
Currency conversion costs disappear on trade between members. Exchange rate risk within the area is removed entirely. Prices become directly comparable across borders, which sharpens competition.
- 6
How does a single currency affect investment?
Model answer
Removal of exchange rate risk makes cross-border investment more attractive. The risk premium demanded by investors falls. Capital markets deepen as instruments are denominated in one currency.
