- 1
What is an arahant?
Model answer
An arahant (Sanskrit arhat) is a worthy one who has reached nibbana by following the Buddha's teaching. An arahant is free of greed, hatred and delusion and will not be reborn.
- 2
What are the four stages on the path to becoming an arahant?
Model answer
The stages are stream-enterer, once-returner, non-returner and arahant. Each stage breaks more of the fetters that bind beings to samsara.
- 3
What is a bodhisattva?
Model answer
A bodhisattva is a being who vows to become a Buddha for the sake of all beings. Out of compassion, a bodhisattva remains in samsara to help others.
- 4
What are the characteristics of a bodhisattva?
Model answer
A bodhisattva combines great compassion (karuna) with wisdom (prajna). Bodhisattvas develop the six perfections over many lifetimes.
- 5
How does a bodhisattva's path begin and progress?
Model answer
The path begins with bodhicitta, the wish to attain Enlightenment for all beings. The bodhisattva then passes through ten stages (bhumis).
- 6
What is a Buddha?
Model answer
A Buddha is a fully awakened being who has discovered the path and teaches it. Buddhists believe Gotama is the Buddha of this age.
