Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What do Hindus mean by prakriti?

    Model answer

Prakriti is primal matter or nature, the material from which the physical world is made. Prakriti is always changing and has no consciousness of its own.

  2. 2

What do Hindus mean by purusha?

    Model answer

Purusha is pure consciousness, the conscious spirit. Purusha does not change and simply witnesses the activity of prakriti.

  3. 3

What are the three gunas in Hindu teaching?

    Model answer

The gunas are sattva, rajas and tamas, the three qualities that make up prakriti. Sattva is goodness and light, rajas is passion and tamas is inertia.

  4. 4

How do the gunas determine the nature of things?

    Model answer

The balance of the three gunas gives everything its character. A calm, wise person has much sattva, while a dull, lazy person is ruled by tamas.

  5. 5

How do prakriti, purusha and the gunas together produce the material world?

    Model answer

The world begins when the balance of the gunas in prakriti is disturbed in the presence of purusha. Prakriti then unfolds into mind, senses and the physical elements.

  6. 6

What does Bhagavad Gita XIII 19–20 teach about prakriti and purusha?

    Model answer

Krishna teaches that prakriti and purusha are both without beginning. Prakriti is the cause of body and senses, while purusha experiences pleasure and pain.
