What are the Ten Obligatory Acts?

The Ten Obligatory Acts are the practical duties of Shi'a Islam, known as Furu ad-Din. Shi'a Muslims see them as branches growing from the roots of faith.
- 2
Which acts make up the Ten Obligatory Acts?
Model answer
The acts are Salat, Sawm, Zakah, Khums, Hajj and Jihad. The other four are Amr-bil-Maroof, Nahi Anil Munkar, Tawalla and Tabarra.

Why are the Ten Obligatory Acts important to Shi'a Muslims?

How does Shi'a Salat differ from Sunni Salah?
Model answer
Many Shi'a Muslims combine the five prayers into three sessions each day. Shi'a Muslims often pray with arms at their sides and rest the forehead on a clay tablet, the turbah.
- 5
How does Zakah work in Shi'a Islam?
Model answer
Shi'a Zakah is a yearly alms like Sunni Zakah. Most Shi'a scholars apply it to nine set items, such as gold and silver coins, wheat, dates and livestock.
- 6
What is Khums as one of the Ten Obligatory Acts?
Model answer
Khums is an annual payment of one-fifth of a Shi'a Muslim's surplus gains. Khums is worked out on what remains after a year's living costs.
