Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does jihad mean?
Model answer
Jihad means struggle or striving in the way of Allah. Jihad covers the inner fight against sin and the outer defence of Islam.
- 2
What is greater jihad?
Model answer
Greater jihad is every Muslim's struggle to live according to the straight path. Greater jihad includes resisting temptation, praying faithfully and helping others.
- 3
What is lesser jihad?
Model answer
Lesser jihad is the outward struggle to remove evil from society, including by force when necessary. The goal of lesser jihad is to make the world an abode of peace.
- 4
Why does greater jihad take precedence over lesser jihad?
Model answer
A widely quoted hadith, though weak in its chain, has Muhammad call the inner struggle the greater jihad. Personal faith must be right before any outward struggle can be just.
- 5
What are the conditions for declaring lesser jihad?
Model answer
Lesser jihad must be declared by a legitimate leader and fought in self-defence or against oppression. War must be a last resort, never for conquest or revenge.
- 6
What rules govern the conduct of lesser jihad?
Model answer
Women, children, the elderly and other civilians must not be harmed. Crops, trees and places of worship must be spared, and fighting must stop when the enemy seeks peace.
