Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What would Jewish exclusivism mean, and who holds views close to it?
Model answer
Jewish exclusivism would hold that only Judaism teaches the truth about G-d. Some strictly Orthodox Jews hold that only the Torah is fully true, though they do not deny salvation to others.
- 2
Why is Judaism not exclusivist about salvation?
Model answer
The rabbis taught that the righteous of all nations have a share in the world to come. Non-Jews do not need to convert to be right with G-d.
- 3
What are the Noachide laws?
Model answer
The Noachide laws are seven laws Judaism teaches G-d gave all humanity through Noah. The laws forbid idolatry, blasphemy, murder, theft and sexual immorality. The laws also forbid eating flesh from a living animal and require courts of justice.
- 4
What is Jewish inclusivism?
Model answer
Inclusivism holds that one's own faith has the fullest truth but others contain real truth too. Many Jews see Christianity and Islam as sharing belief in the one G-d of Abraham.
- 5
What is Jewish pluralism?
Model answer
Pluralism holds that many religions can be equally valid paths to G-d. Many Reform and Liberal Jews take a pluralist view.
- 6
How did Jonathan Sacks express a pluralist idea?
Model answer
Sacks wrote The Dignity of Difference in 2002, arguing that G-d values the diversity of faiths. Sacks revised the book after Orthodox critics objected.
