Who receives the two halves of Khums?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the word khums mean, and where does the duty come from?
Model answer
Khums means one-fifth. The duty comes from Surah 8:41, which assigns a fifth of gains to Allah, the Prophet and his kin.
- 2
How do Sunni and Shi'a Muslims read Surah 8:41 differently?
Model answer
Sunni Muslims apply the fifth mainly to war booty and buried treasure, not ordinary income. Shi'a Muslims apply it to all surplus gains, so Khums remains a yearly duty.
- 3
Who receives the two halves of Khums?
Model answer
Half, the share of the Imam, is given to a senior Shi'a scholar for religious work. The other half supports needy descendants of the Prophet, called sayyids.
- 4
How are Khums and Zakah separate?
Model answer
Zakah is paid on set kinds of wealth to the eight groups in Surah 9:60. Khums is a separate fifth of surplus gains, paid only by Shi'a Muslims.
- 5
What is sadaqah?
Model answer
Sadaqah is voluntary charity given at any time, in any amount. Sadaqah can be money, but also a kind word or a smile.
- 6
How is sadaqah different from Zakah?
Model answer
Zakah is a compulsory yearly duty at a fixed rate. Sadaqah is freely chosen, and its amount and timing are up to the giver.
