Pesach remembers the Exodus, when G-d freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. The angel of death passed over Israelite homes during the tenth plague.
- 3
What does Exodus 12:5–8 command?
Model answer
Each household was to take a lamb without blemish, slaughter it and put its blood on the doorposts. The lamb was eaten roasted, with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
- 4
What does Exodus 12:14–15 teach about Pesach?
Model answer
The day is to be kept as a festival for all generations. Unleavened bread is eaten for seven days, and leaven must be removed from homes.
- 5
What is chametz, and why is it removed before Pesach?
Model answer
Chametz is leavened food made from grain that has risen, such as bread. The Israelites left Egypt in such haste that their dough had no time to rise.
- 6
How do Jews remove chametz from the home?
Model answer
Families clean the home thoroughly and search for the last crumbs by candlelight the night before Pesach. Remaining chametz is burned or sold to a non-Jew.
