Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What are the words of the Shahadah?

    Model answer

The Shahadah declares lā ʾilāha ʾillā-llāh, muḥammadur-rasūlu-llāh. The words mean that there is no god but God and Muhammad is the messenger of God.

  2. 2

How is the Shahadah used when a baby is born?

    Model answer

The adhan, which contains the Shahadah, is whispered into a newborn baby's right ear. The Shahadah is the first thing a Muslim child hears.

  3. 3

How does a person convert to Islam?

    Model answer

A person becomes a Muslim by sincerely reciting the Shahadah, usually in front of two Muslim witnesses. The Shahadah alone is enough, with no further ceremony required.

  4. 4

What part does the Shahadah play at death?

    Model answer

Muslims hope to say the Shahadah as their last words. Family members recite it beside a dying person so that the person can repeat it.

  5. 5

Why is the Shahadah called the only non-action pillar?

    Model answer

The Shahadah is a statement of belief, while the other four pillars are actions. The Shahadah gives the other pillars their meaning.

  6. 6

What do many Shi'a Muslims add when reciting the Shahadah?

    Model answer

Many Shi'a Muslims add that Ali is the wali, or friend, of Allah. Shi'a scholars teach that the addition expresses belief but is not a required part.
