  1. 1

What does Tawhid mean for Muslims?

    Model answer

Tawhid is the belief that Allah is one, unique and without partners. Tawhid is the central belief of Islam, on which every other belief depends.

  2. 2

    What is shirk?

    Model answer

Shirk is associating partners or equals with Allah. Surah 4:48 says Allah does not forgive shirk, though He forgives lesser sins.

  3. 3

How are Tawhid and shirk related?

    Model answer

Shirk is the direct opposite of Tawhid, because it gives Allah's unique status to something else. A Muslim protects Tawhid by rejecting every form of shirk.

  4. 4

What does Tawhid imply about polytheism?

    Model answer

Polytheism, the worship of many gods, is shirk and cannot be accepted. Muslims believe only Allah deserves worship.

  5. 5

    What does Surah 53:19–25 teach?

    Model answer

Surah 53:19–25 rejects the goddesses al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat, worshipped in Makkah before Islam. The Qur'an calls them mere names with no authority from Allah.

  6. 6

What does Surah 112, al-Ikhlas, teach about Allah?

    Model answer

Surah 112 says Allah is One and eternal, the one on whom all depend. Allah neither begets nor is born, and nothing is equal to Him.
