Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is justice in Judaism?

    Model answer

Justice, tzedek, means fairness and giving each person what is right. Deuteronomy 16:20 commands, “Justice, justice you shall pursue”.

  2. 2

What is injustice, and how do Jews view it?

    Model answer

Injustice is unfair treatment, such as oppression, exploitation or discrimination. The prophets condemned injustice as a betrayal of the covenant.

  3. 3

What does Genesis 9:6 teach about justice?

    Model answer

Whoever sheds human blood will have their blood shed by humans, because humans are made in G-d's image. The rabbis made the death penalty so hard to impose that it was almost never used.

  4. 4

What does Exodus 21:23–24 teach, and how did the rabbis interpret it?

    Model answer

The Torah demands “an eye for an eye”, a punishment matching the harm done. The rabbis interpreted it as fair financial compensation, not physical injury.

  5. 5

How is peace related to a just society in Judaism?

    Model answer

Jews believe there can be no lasting peace without justice. Pirkei Avot teaches that the world stands on justice, truth and peace.

  6. 6

What is social justice in Judaism?

    Model answer

Social justice is fairness in how wealth, power and opportunity are shared. Jews see caring for the poor as a duty, not an optional kindness.
