Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How do Hindu weddings fit with British marriage law?
Model answer
A Hindu wedding in Britain is legally valid only in a registered building or with a separate civil ceremony. Most Hindus accept this as compatible with their view of marriage.
- 2
How do Hindus distinguish an arranged marriage from a forced marriage?
Model answer
An arranged marriage is one where families introduce a partner and both people freely consent. A forced marriage is one without free consent, which Hindu leaders condemn.
- 3
What does British law say about forced marriage?
Model answer
Forced marriage became a criminal offence in England and Wales in 2014. The law protects each person's right of self-determination.
- 4
What is the Hindu response to child marriage, and what does the law now say?
Model answer
Most Hindus today reject child marriage, although it was once customary in parts of India. Marriage under 18 has been illegal in England and Wales since 2023, even with parental consent.
- 5
How do the Laws of Manu clash with modern marriage law?
Model answer
The Manusmriti allows very young brides and places a wife under her husband's authority. British law requires adult consent and equal rights for both spouses.
- 6
How do Hindu attitudes to equality meet British equality law?
Model answer
The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination on grounds such as sex, religion and sexual orientation. Many Hindus welcome the Act, since the atman is equal in all.
