Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What counts as religious experience for Buddhists?
Model answer
A religious experience is a direct encounter with a deeper reality, such as insight or profound peace. Buddhists stress experience over belief.
- 2
How is taking the Three Refuges a form of conversion?
Model answer
A person becomes a Buddhist by reciting the refuges in the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha three times. The recitation marks a turning of the heart towards the path.
- 3
How do Buddhists interpret mystical experience?
Model answer
A mystical experience is a sense of oneness or boundless awareness beyond ordinary thought. Buddhists interpret it as a glimpse of the mind's true nature, not union with God.
- 4
What are the four form jhanas?
Model answer
The jhanas are states of deep meditative absorption. The four form jhanas move through rapture and happiness to pure equanimity.
- 5
What are the four formless jhanas?
Model answer
The formless jhanas are infinite space, infinite consciousness, nothingness, and neither perception nor non-perception. The formless jhanas go beyond all sense of bodily form.
- 6
What does the Ariyapariyesana Sutta (Majjhima Nikaya 26) show about the jhanas?
Model answer
Siddhattha mastered formless states under his teachers Alara Kalama and Uddaka Ramaputta, but they did not bring nibbana. The sutta later says a monk who passes through every attainment blinds Mara.
