Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does UK law distinguish an arranged marriage from a forced marriage?
Model answer
An arranged marriage is lawful because both people freely consent to the match their families suggest. A forced marriage lacks the free consent of one or both, and Islam forbids it too.
- 2
What example does the Prophet give against forced marriage?
Model answer
A hadith records the Prophet cancelling the marriage of a woman married against her will. Muslim scholars agree that consent is required for a valid marriage.
- 3
What does UK law say about forced marriage?
Model answer
Forced marriage became a criminal offence in England and Wales in 2014. The Forced Marriage Unit helps people at risk, including British citizens abroad.
- 4
What is the law on child marriage in England and Wales?
Model answer
Child marriage is marriage where one or both partners are under 18. Since 2023 the legal minimum age for marriage in England and Wales has been 18, even with parental consent.
- 5
How do Muslims respond to the ban on child marriage?
Model answer
Many Muslim scholars and organisations in Britain support the ban on marriage under 18. Some traditional scholars argue that maturity, not a fixed age, marks readiness for marriage.
- 6
Why must a Muslim nikah in Britain usually be registered civilly?
Model answer
A nikah alone is not recognised as a legal marriage in England and Wales. Without civil registration, a wife may lose legal rights if the marriage ends.
