Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the Jewish attitude to divorce?

    Model answer

Judaism permits divorce as a sad last resort when a marriage has broken down. The Talmud says even the altar weeps when a man divorces the wife of his youth.

  2. 2

What does Deuteronomy 24:1 teach about divorce?

    Model answer

A husband who finds something objectionable in his wife may write her a bill of divorce. The document is placed in her hand, and she leaves his house.

  3. 3

    What is a get?

    Model answer

A get is the Jewish document of divorce, written by a scribe and given by the husband to the wife. A Beth Din, a rabbinic court, supervises the process.

  4. 4

Why is a civil divorce not enough for Orthodox Jews?

    Model answer

Orthodox Jews regard a marriage as ended only when a get is given. A woman who remarries without a get is still married in Jewish law.

  5. 5

    What is an agunah?

    Model answer

An agunah, meaning “chained woman”, is a wife whose husband refuses to give her a get. The woman cannot remarry under Orthodox Jewish law.

  6. 6

How have Jewish communities tried to help agunot?

    Model answer

Many Orthodox couples now sign a prenuptial agreement committing them to a get if the marriage ends. The Divorce (Religious Marriages) Act 2002 lets a UK court delay a civil divorce until a get is given.
