Dharma means duty, right conduct and the order that upholds life. Dharma differs with a person's age, role and situation, so no single rule fits everyone.

What role does dharma play in Hindu life?
Model answer
Dharma guides how Hindus should act towards family, society and God. A life lived by dharma keeps personal and social life in harmony.
- 5
How is dharma related to varna?
Model answer
Traditional teaching gives each varna its own dharma, such as teaching for Brahmins and protection for Kshatriyas. Varna duty was believed to keep society stable.
- 6
How is dharma related to the ashramas?
Model answer
Each stage of life has its own dharma, from study as a student to renunciation in old age. A householder's dharma includes supporting a family and giving to others.
