Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is prayer important in Jewish worship?
Model answer
Prayer, tefillah, is a way of building a relationship with G-d. The rabbis called prayer the service of the heart, which replaced the Temple sacrifices.
- 2
What is the Amidah?
Model answer
The Amidah is the standing prayer at the centre of every Jewish service. The Amidah is also called the Shemoneh Esreh, the Eighteen Blessings.
- 3
How is the Amidah recited?
Model answer
Jews stand with feet together, facing Jerusalem, and say the Amidah silently. The prayer leader then repeats it aloud when a minyan is present.
- 4
What are the three sections of the Amidah?
Model answer
The Amidah opens with blessings of praise and ends with blessings of thanks. The middle blessings on weekdays are requests for needs such as health and forgiveness.
- 5
What are the three daily periods of prayer?
Model answer
Shacharit is said in the morning, Minchah in the afternoon and Ma'ariv in the evening. Tradition links them with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and with the Temple offerings.
- 6
Why do Jews pray three times a day?
Model answer
Regular prayer keeps G-d at the centre of the whole day. The prophet Daniel prayed three times a day facing Jerusalem.
