Samatha aims to calm the mind and overcome distractions. Deep samatha leads to states of absorption called jhanas.

Metta bhavana is the cultivation of loving-kindness. The meditator wishes happiness to themselves, then to a friend, a neutral person, a difficult person and all beings.

Model answer
Metta bhavana aims to replace anger and ill will with universal goodwill. The practice weakens the poison of hatred.

What is vipassana meditation?
Model answer
Vipassana means insight. The meditator observes body and mind closely to see anicca, dukkha and anatta directly.
- 6
How do samatha and vipassana work together?
Model answer
Samatha steadies the mind, like holding a torch still. Vipassana uses that steady mind to see clearly into reality.
