Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is Rosh Hashanah?
Model answer
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, on the first day of the month of Tishri. Rosh Hashanah begins the Days of Awe, a time of judgement and repentance.
- 2
What does Numbers 29:1 command?
Model answer
The first day of the seventh month is a holy day of rest. The verse calls it a day of sounding the horn, which Jews fulfil with the shofar.
- 3
What is Teshuva?
Model answer
Teshuva means repentance, literally “returning” to G-d. Teshuva involves regretting a wrong, putting it right and resolving not to repeat it.
- 4
What is the shofar, and why is it blown?
Model answer
The shofar is a ram's horn blown a hundred times during the Rosh Hashanah services. The blasts are a wake-up call to repent and recall the ram sacrificed instead of Isaac.
- 5
What symbolic foods are eaten at Rosh Hashanah?
Model answer
Apple dipped in honey expresses hope for a sweet new year. Round challah stands for the cycle of the year, and pomegranate seeds for many good deeds.
- 6
What is Tashlich?
Model answer
Tashlich is a ceremony held at flowing water on Rosh Hashanah afternoon, based on Micah 7:19. Jews throw breadcrumbs into the water as a sign of G-d casting sins into the sea.
