Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How might Jews view secular ethics and values taught in schools?
Model answer
Secular values in schools include tolerance, equality and respect for individual choice. Many Jews share these values but want children also to learn Jewish ethics.
- 2
What does the Education Reform Act 1988 require, and how does it affect Jewish pupils?
Model answer
The Act requires RE in state schools to be mainly Christian while including other principal religions. Daily collective worship must be broadly Christian. Jewish parents may withdraw their children from both.
- 3
Why do many Jewish parents choose Jewish faith schools?
Model answer
Jewish schools teach Hebrew, Torah and Jewish history alongside the national curriculum. The schools help children keep Shabbat, festivals and kashrut with their community.
- 4
Why do some people oppose faith schools, and how do Jews respond?
Model answer
Critics such as Humanists UK argue that faith schools divide children by religion. Jewish supporters reply that a secure identity gives children confidence to engage with others.
- 5
What was the JFS case?
Model answer
In 2009 the UK Supreme Court ruled that JFS's admissions policy, based on Orthodox rules of Jewish descent, was unlawful racial discrimination. Jewish schools now use tests of religious practice, such as synagogue attendance.
- 6
How do Jewish teachings on marriage relate to British law?
Model answer
A Jewish wedding is also a legal marriage when registered by the synagogue's secretary for marriages. Religious divorce remains separate, so couples need both a civil divorce and a get.
