Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is kamma?
Model answer
Kamma (Sanskrit karma) means intentional action. Skilful actions bring happy results and unskilful actions bring suffering, in this life or future lives.
- 2
Why does intention matter in kamma?
Model answer
The Buddha said that intention (cetana) is kamma. An accidental harm carries far less weight than a deliberate one.
- 3
What is punabbhava?
Model answer
Punabbhava means rebirth or re-becoming. Kamma shapes the realm and conditions of each new life in samsara.
- 4
How is kamma related to nibbana?
Model answer
Kamma keeps beings in samsara, and even good kamma leads only to a better rebirth. Nibbana is reached when craving ends and no new kamma is made.
- 5
What is karuna?
Model answer
Karuna means compassion, the wish for all beings to be free from suffering. Karuna moves Buddhists to help those in pain.
- 6
What is metta?
Model answer
Metta (Sanskrit maitri) means loving-kindness, the wish for all beings to be happy. Metta is offered to friends, strangers and enemies alike.
