What is traditional Hindu teaching on homosexuality?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does Hinduism understand sexual desire?
Model answer
Kama, the pursuit of pleasure and love, is one of the four legitimate aims of life. Sexual desire is good when it is kept within dharma, usually marriage.
- 2
What does the Kama Sutra show about Hindu attitudes to sexuality?
Model answer
The Kama Sutra, written by Vatsyayana, treats sexual love as an art to be studied. The Kama Sutra shows that Hindu tradition does not see sex as shameful in itself.
- 3
What is traditional Hindu teaching on homosexuality?
Model answer
Traditional law books such as the Manusmriti prescribe penances for sex between people of the same sex. Most traditional Hindus see marriage as between a man and a woman for having children.
- 4
How do some Hindus use the idea of a third nature (tritiya prakriti) in debates about sexuality?
Model answer
Ancient texts such as the Kama Sutra recognise people of a third nature, neither fully male nor female. Some Hindus argue that sexual diversity has always been part of Hindu life.
- 5
Why do some Hindus accept same-sex marriage?
Model answer
Some Hindus argue that the atman is neither male nor female, so love between any two souls is valid. Some Hindu priests in Britain and the USA have conducted same-sex weddings.
- 6
Why do other Hindus oppose same-sex marriage?
Model answer
Many Hindus see marriage as a samskara for the grihastha stage, which includes having children. Many Hindus also hold that marriage must follow traditional scripture and family expectation.
