What is the difference between natural evil and moral evil?
Model answer
Natural evil is suffering caused by nature, such as earthquakes and disease. Moral evil is suffering caused by human choices, such as war and theft.
- 3
What do Christians teach about the causes of evil?
Model answer
Moral evil is caused by humans misusing their free will. Some Christians trace natural evil to the Fall damaging the whole of creation.
- 4
What does Genesis 3:1–19 teach about the origin of evil?
Model answer
The serpent tempts Eve, and Adam and Eve disobey God. Pain, hard labour and death follow as consequences of their sin.
- 5
How is the Fall linked to free will?
Model answer
God gave humans the freedom to choose, and Adam and Eve chose to disobey. Evil entered the world through that free choice.
- 6
What is original sin?

Original sin is the state of sin inherited by all humans from the Fall. Every person is born with a tendency to do wrong.
