  1. 1

What does Sangha mean as one of the Three Jewels?

    Model answer

Sangha means the community of the Buddha's followers. In its narrow sense, the Sangha is the community of monks and nuns.

  2. 2

How do Buddhist groups define the Sangha differently?

    Model answer

Theravada Buddhists usually mean the monastic community. Many Mahayana and Western Buddhists use the word for the whole community of monks, nuns and lay followers.

  3. 3

What is the role of the monastic sangha?

    Model answer

Monks and nuns preserve and teach the Dhamma and devote their lives to practice. Monastics give lay people the chance to earn merit through giving.

  4. 4

What is the role of the lay sangha?

    Model answer

Lay Buddhists support monks and nuns with food, robes and medicine. Lay followers keep the Five Precepts and practise in daily life.

  5. 5

    What is the alms round?

    Model answer

The alms round is the early-morning walk on which monks receive food from lay people. The exchange gives the monks their meal and gives the lay people merit.

  6. 6

    What are the Ten Precepts?

    Model answer

The Ten Precepts are the Five Precepts, with the third made complete celibacy, plus five more. Novices give up food after midday, entertainment, jewellery and perfume, luxurious beds and handling money.
