- 1
What do Muslims mean by understandings of sexuality?
Model answer
Understandings of sexuality are beliefs about sexual orientation and how it may be expressed. Most Muslims teach that sexual activity belongs only within marriage between a man and a woman.
- 2
What is the traditional Muslim teaching on same-sex relationships?
Model answer
Traditional Sunni and Shi'a scholars teach that same-sex sexual acts are forbidden. Scholars cite the Qur'an's accounts of the people of Lut.
- 3
How do many Muslims distinguish between orientation and acts?
Model answer
Many Muslim scholars teach that feeling same-sex attraction is not itself a sin. Only sexual acts outside the marriage of a man and a woman are forbidden.
- 4
Why do most Muslims oppose same-sex marriage?
Model answer
Most Muslims believe Allah designed marriage for a man and a woman, partly for having children. Surah 7:189 describes the first couple as a man and his wife.
- 5
When did same-sex marriage become legal in England and Wales?
Model answer
Same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales in 2014. Religious groups are not required to conduct same-sex weddings.
- 6
What is a civil partnership?
Model answer
A civil partnership is a legally recognised union with rights similar to marriage, without religious content. Civil partnerships began in the UK in 2005 and opened to opposite-sex couples in England and Wales in 2019.
