Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the traditional Hindu view of sex before marriage?
Model answer
Traditional Hindus believe sex belongs only within marriage. The student stage, brahmacharya, calls for chastity until marriage.
- 2
Why do many Hindus disapprove of pre-marital sex?
Model answer
Pre-marital sex is thought to weaken self-control and harm a family's reputation. Pre-marital sex can also risk a child being born outside a stable family.
- 3
How are Hindu attitudes to pre-marital sex changing?
Model answer
Some younger Hindus, especially in the West, accept sex in a committed relationship before marriage. Many families still expect chastity before marriage.
- 4
What is cohabitation, and how do most Hindus view it?
Model answer
Cohabitation is a couple living together in a sexual relationship without being married. Most Hindus disapprove, because the relationship lacks the sacred commitment of a samskara.
- 5
What might a Humanist say about cohabitation, and how might a Hindu reply?
Model answer
A Humanist might say cohabitation is a responsible choice for a loving couple. A Hindu might reply that vows made before Agni give a stronger commitment.
- 6
What is celibacy, and when do Hindus practise it?
Model answer
Celibacy is abstaining from sex. Hindus traditionally practise celibacy as students and as sannyasis in the final stage of life.
