Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is varnashrama dharma?

    Model answer

Varnashrama dharma is the duty that comes from a person's varna and stage of life (ashrama). Traditional Hindus see it as the pattern for a well-ordered society.

  2. 2

    What are the four varnas?

    Model answer

The four varnas are Brahmins, who are priests and teachers, and Kshatriyas, who are rulers and warriors. Vaishyas are merchants and farmers, and Shudras are labourers and servants.

  3. 3

How does the Purusha Sukta describe the origin of the varnas?

    Model answer

The Purusha Sukta (Rig Veda X.90) describes the sacrifice of the cosmic being, Purusha. Brahmins come from his mouth, Kshatriyas from his arms, Vaishyas from his thighs and Shudras from his feet.

  4. 4

    What are the four ashramas?

    Model answer

The ashramas are the student (brahmacharya), the householder (grihastha), the retired forest-dweller (vanaprastha) and the renunciant (sannyasa). Each stage has its own duties.

  5. 5

Why is varnashrama dharma significant for individuals and society?

    Model answer

Individuals know their duties at every stage of life. Society benefits when each person contributes their part, like organs in one body.

  6. 6

How far do Hindus today follow the four ashramas?

    Model answer

Most Hindus live as students and householders, but few become sannyasis. Many see later life as a time for more worship and less worldly ambition.
