Model answer
The Just War theory sets out conditions under which war can be morally justified. The theory was developed by Augustine and Thomas Aquinas.

What conditions did Thomas Aquinas set for a Just War?
Model answer
Aquinas required legitimate authority, a just cause and a right intention. Later thinkers added last resort, proportionality and a reasonable chance of success.

Model answer
Jus in bello means justice in the conduct of war. Combatants must avoid targeting civilians and use only proportionate force.
- 4

Model answer
Prisoners and civilians must be treated humanely, and torture is wrong. Christians should fight without hatred or revenge.
- 5
What is a Holy War?
Model answer
A Holy War is a war fought in the name of God, believed to be commanded by God. Holy War aims to defend or spread a faith.
- 6
How do most Christians view Holy War today?
Model answer
Most Christians reject Holy War as incompatible with Jesus' teaching. The Crusades are now widely regretted.
