- 1
What is Milchemet Mitzvah?
Model answer
Milchemet Mitzvah, or obligatory war, is a war commanded by G-d. Examples include Joshua's conquest of Canaan and a war of self-defence.
- 2
What is Milchemet Reshut?
Model answer
Milchemet Reshut is an optional or permitted war, fought for reasons such as expanding territory. A Milchemet Reshut needed the approval of the Sanhedrin, the highest Jewish court.
- 3
Why is Milchemet Mitzvah sometimes called holy war?
Model answer
Milchemet Mitzvah is fought because G-d commands it, not for gain. Most Jews today apply the idea only to self-defence against attack.
- 4
What does Joshua 1:2–3 teach?
Model answer
G-d tells Joshua to lead Israel across the Jordan after Moses' death. G-d promises to give them every place where their feet tread.
- 5
How do Jews interpret wars such as Joshua's today?
Model answer
Most Jews see the conquest of Canaan as belonging to a unique moment in history. The commands of that time are not applied to modern wars.
- 6
What does Deuteronomy 20:10–13 teach about war?
Model answer
Israel must offer peace to a city before attacking it. War is allowed only if the offer of peace is refused.
