  1. 1

    What is Kiddushin?

    Model answer

Kiddushin, meaning “sanctification”, is the betrothal stage of a Jewish marriage. The bride is set apart for her husband alone.

  2. 2

    Why is Kiddushin important?

    Model answer

Kiddushin shows that marriage is a holy commitment, not only a contract. Today Kiddushin and the full marriage, nissuin, take place in one ceremony.

  3. 3

    What is the Ketubah?

    Model answer

The Ketubah is the marriage contract, written in Aramaic and signed by two witnesses. The Ketubah sets out the husband's duties to his wife and her rights if the marriage ends.

  4. 4

What is the Huppah, and what does it symbolise?

    Model answer

The Huppah is the canopy under which the couple stand during the wedding. The Huppah is open on all sides, symbolising the new home and its welcome to guests.

  5. 5

Why is wine drunk during a Jewish wedding?

    Model answer

Blessings are said over two cups of wine, one for the betrothal and one for the seven blessings. Wine symbolises joy, and the couple share both cups.

  6. 6

What is the significance of the ring at a Jewish wedding?

    Model answer

The groom places a plain gold ring on the bride's right index finger. The groom declares her consecrated to him by the law of Moses and Israel. The plain band shows the marriage is simple and unbroken.
