Why might evil and suffering challenge Hindus who believe in a good personal God?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why might evil and suffering challenge Hindus who believe in a good personal God?
Model answer
A Lord who is all-good and all-powerful would seem both willing and able to prevent suffering. The existence of suffering therefore raises questions about the Lord's goodness or power.
- 2
How do Hindus distinguish moral evil from natural evil?
Model answer
Moral evil is suffering caused by human choices, such as violence and cruelty. Natural evil is suffering caused by nature, such as earthquakes and disease.
- 3
How does karma answer the problem of suffering for Hindus?
Model answer
Karma teaches that suffering is the result of a person's own past actions, not a punishment sent by God. God is therefore not to blame for suffering.
- 4
What criticisms are made of the karma explanation of suffering?
Model answer
Critics say the explanation can seem to blame victims, such as disabled children, for their suffering. Critics also ask why nobody remembers the past lives being punished.
- 5
How might a Hindu reply to the claim that karma blames victims?
Model answer
A Hindu might reply that karma explains suffering but never excuses cruelty or indifference. The duty of daya means Hindus must help those who suffer.
- 6
How does maya help some Hindus respond to suffering?
Model answer
Advaitins teach that suffering belongs to the world of maya and does not touch the true self. Knowledge of the atman frees a person from suffering.
