Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why is private prayer important for Jews?

    Model answer

Private prayer lets a Jew speak to G-d personally at any time. Hannah's silent, heartfelt prayer for a child is a model of sincere prayer.

  2. 2

    What is spontaneous prayer?

    Model answer

Spontaneous prayer is prayer in a person's own words rather than from the prayer book. Breslov Hasidim value hitbodedut, speaking alone to G-d in one's own language.

  3. 3

    What is the Shema?

    Model answer

The Shema is the declaration of faith beginning “Hear, O Israel”. The Shema is made up of Deuteronomy 6:4–9, Deuteronomy 11:13–21 and Numbers 15:37–41.

  4. 4

    When is the Shema recited?

    Model answer

Jews recite the Shema in the morning and evening prayers and before going to sleep. Many Jews try to make the Shema their last words before death.

  5. 5

Why is Deuteronomy 6:4 significant for Jewish prayer?

    Model answer

The verse states that G-d is One, the heart of Jewish belief. Jews cover their eyes while reciting it to concentrate fully.

  6. 6

    What is Grace after meals?

    Model answer

Grace after meals, Birkat Hamazon, is a set of blessings thanking G-d for food. The practice comes from Deuteronomy 8:10, “you shall eat and be satisfied, and bless the Lord”.
