  1. 1

How soon after death does a Jewish burial take place?

    Model answer

Jews bury the dead as soon as possible, usually within twenty-four hours. Quick burial shows respect for the body, which was made in G-d's image.

  2. 2

How is the body prepared for burial?

    Model answer

Members of the chevra kadisha, the holy society, wash the body and dress it in plain white shrouds. Men are often buried in their tallit.

  3. 3

Why is a Jewish coffin plain?

    Model answer

A plain wooden coffin shows that everyone is equal in death. Rich and poor are buried in the same way.

  4. 4

What is the tearing of clothes?

    Model answer

Mourners tear a garment, called keriah, as a sign of grief. The tear is made over the heart for a parent, and the blessing “Blessed is the true Judge” is said.

  5. 5

    What happens at the graveside?

    Model answer

Mourners help fill the grave by shovelling earth onto the coffin. The Kaddish is recited, and those present comfort the mourners.

  6. 6

    What is the Kaddish?

    Model answer

The Kaddish is an Aramaic prayer praising G-d that never mentions death. Mourners recite it in a minyan to show they still accept G-d's will.
