Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is the Tenakh?

    Model answer

The Tenakh is the Jewish Bible, the Written Law. The name Tenakh comes from the initials of its three parts: Torah, Neviim and Ketuvim.

  2. 2

Name the five books of the Torah.

    Model answer

The Torah contains Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The five books tell the story of the covenant and contain the 613 mitzvot.

  3. 3

What are the Neviim and the Ketuvim?

    Model answer

The Neviim are the books of the Prophets, such as Isaiah and Jeremiah. The Ketuvim are the Writings, such as Psalms, Proverbs and Job.

  4. 4

What is the difference between a Chumash and a Sefer Torah?

    Model answer

A Sefer Torah is the handwritten parchment scroll of the Torah used in the synagogue. A Chumash is the Torah printed as a book, often with commentary, for study and following the reading.

  5. 5

How is a Sefer Torah made?

    Model answer

A trained scribe, a sofer, handwrites every letter with a quill and special ink on parchment. A single mistake left uncorrected makes the scroll unfit for use.

  6. 6

    What is the Talmud?

    Model answer

The Talmud is the Oral Law written down, combining the Mishnah and the Gemara. The Gemara records centuries of rabbinic discussion of the Mishnah.
