Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is secularisation, and how has it affected Britain?
Model answer
Secularisation is the decline of religion's influence on society and public life. Fewer Britons attend worship, and 37% of people in England and Wales reported no religion in 2021.
- 2
How do Muslims respond to secularism as a mode of thought and being?
Model answer
Secularism is the view that government, law and public life should be separate from religion. Many Muslims accept a secular state that protects all faiths but reject secularism as a way of life.
- 3
What place does Islam have in a secular society such as Britain?
Model answer
Muslims in Britain are free to worship, build mosques and run schools. A secular state treats Islam as one belief among many, with no special status.
- 4
How has secularisation affected Muslims in Britain?
Model answer
Unlike Christianity, Islam in Britain has grown, partly through migration and a young population. Some young Muslims still feel pressure from secular culture to practise less.
- 5
How has humanism grown and organised in Britain?
Model answer
Humanism grew as more people chose to live good lives without religion. The British Humanist Association, renamed Humanists UK in 2017, promotes non-religious ethics and ceremonies.
- 6
What does the National Secular Society campaign for?
Model answer
The National Secular Society, founded in 1866, campaigns to separate religion from the state. The society opposes state-funded faith schools and bishops in the House of Lords.
