  1. 1

What are rites of passage, and why are they important in Judaism?

    Model answer

Rites of passage are ceremonies marking key stages of life, such as birth, adulthood, marriage and death. The ceremonies bring the community together and mark each stage as holy.

  2. 2

How is a baby girl welcomed into the Jewish community?

    Model answer

The father is called up to the Torah in the synagogue soon after the birth, and the girl's name is announced. Many families also hold a celebration called Simchat Bat.

  3. 3

    What is Brit Milah?

    Model answer

Brit Milah, the covenant of circumcision, is performed on a Jewish boy on the eighth day after birth. The boy is given his Hebrew name during the ceremony.

  4. 4

How is Brit Milah connected with the covenant with Abraham?

    Model answer

Genesis 17:9–12 commands Abraham to circumcise every male at eight days old. Circumcision is the physical sign of the covenant between G-d and Abraham's descendants.

  5. 5

    Describe the circumcision ceremony.

    Model answer

A blessing is said, and the foreskin is removed quickly by a trained practitioner. The baby is given a drop of wine, and a festive meal follows.

  6. 6

    What is a Mohel?

    Model answer

A Mohel is a Jew trained to perform circumcision safely according to Jewish law. Many Mohels are also doctors.
