- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is intention so important in Buddhist teaching on kamma?
Explain the difference between skilful and unskilful actions.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define kamma.
Model answer
Kamma, or karma in Sanskrit, means action. Buddhists use the word for intentional action and the results it brings.
- 2
Why is intention so important in Buddhist teaching on kamma?
Model answer
The Buddha taught that kamma is above all a matter of intention. An action done with a good motive produces good results even if it goes wrong.
- 3
Explain the difference between skilful and unskilful actions.
Model answer
Skilful actions come from generosity, kindness and wisdom, and lead to happiness. Unskilful actions come from greed, hatred and ignorance, and lead to suffering.
- 4
What do Buddhists mean by rebirth?
Model answer
Rebirth is the continuation of a stream of causes and effects into a new life. Kamma from one life shapes the conditions of the next.
- 5
Why do Buddhists avoid the word reincarnation?
Model answer
Reincarnation suggests a permanent soul moving into a new body. Anatta rules out any such fixed self, so Buddhists speak of rebirth instead.
- 6
Give an image Buddhists use to explain rebirth without a soul.
Model answer
One candle lights another, and the second flame depends on the first without being the same flame. Rebirth works in the same way.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
