What is meant by gender equality?

Gender equality means that women and men have the same rights, value and opportunities. The idea does not require women and men to do identical jobs.
- 2
What is gender prejudice?
Model answer
Gender prejudice is judging someone unfairly because of their sex, before knowing anything about them. Prejudice is an attitude held in the mind.
- 3

Gender discrimination is acting on gender prejudice so that someone is treated worse because of their sex. Refusing a woman a job because she might have children is one example.
- 4
Give two examples of gender discrimination in Britain today.

Women in some jobs are paid less than men who do equivalent work. Women are also passed over for promotion when employers assume they will take time off to have children.
- 5
Which law protects people in Britain from discrimination because of their sex?
Model answer
The Equality Act 2010 makes sex a protected characteristic. Discrimination in work, education or services on grounds of sex is unlawful.
- 6
Which biblical verse is used to argue that men and women are equal before God?
Model answer
Genesis 1:27 says that God created humankind in his own image, male and female. Christians use the verse to argue that both sexes share exactly the same value.
