Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define crime.

    Model answer

A crime is an act that breaks the law of the land and is punishable by the state. Sin breaks a religious law, so a sin is not always a crime.

  2. 2

How can poverty lead a person into crime?

    Model answer

Poverty can leave someone unable to afford food, rent or heating, so theft becomes a temptation. Desperation rather than greed drives some offending.

  3. 3

How can a person's upbringing make offending more likely?

    Model answer

A child raised among crime or without care may never learn that offending is wrong. Neglect and abuse in childhood are linked to offending later in life.

  4. 4

Why do many people say that mental illness should change how an offender is treated?

    Model answer

Serious mental illness can reduce a person's ability to understand or control what they are doing. Treatment in a secure hospital may serve better than a prison sentence.

  5. 5

How is addiction a cause of crime?

    Model answer

Addiction to drugs or alcohol can drive a person to steal to pay for the next supply. Judgement and self-control are weakened by the substance itself.

  6. 6

Explain how greed can lead to crime.

    Model answer

Greed is a selfish desire for more money or possessions than a person needs. Fraud, bribery and theft are often committed by people who are not poor at all.
